The Puzzler

Derk rubbed his head as he walked out of the hospital for the last time.  His treatments were done they could do no more for him.  Physically he had healed just fine but his memory thing, they said would take time and still might not come back.

He could remember very little of the time before the accident.  In fact at first, the whole last year was kind of a blur.  Just bits and pieces, here and there.  It was really annoying.

He remembered waking up in the hospital, “Oh God my head hurt”.  It wasn’t until days later he realized the rest of his body hurt just as much.  He could not move his left arm was his second discovery after he adjusted to the head pain.  His arm was in a cast that went up around his shoulders.  In fact he could not move very much at all.  His right leg had a cast up to and around his hips.  At this time he had no memory at all.  When they asked him what happened, he just stared at them.  He was bewildered and his first thought was “don’t they know”?  After a couple of weeks his mind cleared enough for him to ask, “what happened to me”?  They told him he must have been run over by a truck.  When the medic’s found him he was more dead than alive.  With the injuries he had they figured he would be D.O.A when they got him to the hospital.

He had multiple skull fractures.  His arm was broke in three places and pushed into the shoulder socket fracturing it to.  His right leg was crushed above the knee and his hip ball had been twisted right out of the socket.  That and internal   injuries, plus losing a lot of blood made him a poor candidate for survival.
